The “Rocche del Crasto” constitute a big calcareous massive (rare in the Nebrodi area) accessible by a dirty road that arrives almost on the pick, at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level. The landscape is rugged and bumpy and remembers, in the forms, the Dolomites. Here, on a plateau that is truly a natural terrace, the view extends to the Aeolian Islands, the Madonie Mountains, Mt. Soro and the wide valley of Rosmarino River. The eastern side of the “Rocche”: a little less impervious, presents wreckage of wood of oak, chestnut and some interesting hazel, while the western side has rather impressive vertical walls (geological faults), in which there is the only nesting pair of eagles of Nebrodi. Also it is not uncommon to see the griffins, a species of vulture with an huge wingspan, which nest in the north-western side of the “Rocche”. The return of the excursion is all downhill, along the same way, but it is possibile to predict, as an alternative, the crossing from south to north, to arrive to the town of San Marco d’Alunzio, a typical and ancient mountain village.
